Commitments

As your elected Alderman, Rob Soward commits to working towards the following outcomes ;

• Being a good listener to your concerns and then a strong voice in representing you in trying to resolve the issue.This what I have done as an Alderman- always working hard for you on the successful resolution of issues.

• Less Red and Green Tape- More making good things happen in and around Launceston, its rural areas, all of its suburbs, its CBD.

• An ongoing review of the current Launceston City Council rating system in consultation with the community to determine the fairest and easiest to understand system in Australia.

• Continuing to improve the Tamar River environment. Hold the State government to account for their promised funding for a Tamar River clean up and removal of the silt. Since being elected to council, the condition of the river has improved in line with the work we have done on it with tens of thousands of tonnes of silt removed.

• Development opportunities that create employment in these tough economic times.

• Increased safety and prevention of anti social behaviour across the city and particularly in the CBD / Mall area.

• State Government Funding for regional facilities like Aurora Stadium, Launceston Aquatic, NTCA Ground and Churchill Park. These are regional facilities used by tens of thousands of Northern Tasmanians and should not just be funded by Launceston ratepayers.

• Sensible council spending to give you great value for money- NO WASTE.

and particularly as part of the Rejuvenation/ renewal of the CBD-

. Greater council spending on the creation of family friendly spaces, newer seating and more green space/ gardens/ flowers- increased resources for cleaning up the city as part of City Heart and a greater use of Civic Square like you see in places like Federation Square, Darling Harbor etc..

· Incentives for developers developing inner city living- rates remission for 12 months and permit discounts- no cost to council but a rates generator for future earnings.

· Incentives for building façade renewal / renovation.

· All Launceston ratepayers and residents receiving parking discount vouchers for use between April and September providing 2 hrs free parking / 2 hrs parking discount off longer off street stays in council car parks.The 330-530 free parking and pensioner discount parking still remains.

· Tiger bus downsized to a smaller bus that’s cheaper to operate.

· More market style events in the city to get people into the CBD particularly in the quieter months.

I have a strong, proven track record of bringing Notices of Motion to council – 17 in 3 years- second most of all aldermen with the majority aimed at improving the CBD / stimulating economic growth- I led the campaign to keep Express post overnight services in Launceston and organised a petition of 10,000 people working in with Cityprom, the Chamber and 100 + businesses. I worked with Cityprom on the reinstatement of the Christmas tree, I have taken notices of motion to council supporting major events that bring people into Launceston- not just saying I support them but lobbying to keep them and trying to secure funding to assist them bring thousands of people to Launceston.

Political affiliations- Independent. I am not a member of any political party and haven't been since elected to council in 2009.
